Mental health is how we think, feel and act as we cope with life. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Everyone feels worried, anxious, sad or stressed sometimes. But with a mental illness, these feelings do not go away and are severe enough to interfere with your daily life. It can make it hard to meet and keep friends, hold a job or enjoy your life.
Mental illnesses are common – they affect about one in five families in the U.S. It is not your fault if you have one. These disorders – depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and many others - are real diseases that you cannot will or wish away. Fortunately, they are often treatable. |

A positive state of mind engendering a sense of well being that enables a person to function effectively within society. Individuals who have good mental health are well-adjusted to society, are able to relate well to others, and basically feel satisfied with themselves and their role in society.
Breakdown of mental health is a major problem in Western societies: it has been estimated that at least one in four adults will suffer from some form of mental disorder, such as depression, during their life. Many physicians and psychologists believe that individuals are physical, mental, and spiritual beings and that these aspects are interrelated. Consequently, mental health is not possible without both physical and spiritual health.
Although there is no clear cause-and-effect relationship between exercise and mental health, aerobic exercise can improve self-esteem, lessen anxiety, and relieve depression. Exercise can act as a form of meditation, changing the state of consciousness and providing a distraction from stressful situations. Many doctors believe that exercise improves mental health and prescribe exercise to relieve depression and anxiety. Walking is the most frequently prescribed exercise, followed by swimming, bicycling, strength training, and running.

The saying that true love knows no bounds is absolutely correct - and those that suffer from mental conditions have every right in the world to the same happiness and fulfillment that those without such illnesses enjoy. There is still a certain social stigma that stems from the topic of dating someone with a mental health illness, but those that find themselves attracted to someone already in the process of handling such an issue can still find happiness in spite of all odds. Behind every person with a mental health illness is someone that deserves love, kindness, and respect. The problem is that there can be a lot of misunderstandings between someone with a mental health issue and someone without that issue - those misunderstandings can often lead to deeper problems that lead to painful breakups. Mental Health Breaks
Are you challenged to live authentically and in alignment with your spiritual values on a daily basis? Many of us are so busy every day that it's hard to even remember what spiritual values are when we are on the go from morning to night. We have children to raise, jobs to commute to, work to do, meetings to attend, emails and phone calls to return, soccer practices and music lessons to chauffeur kids to. It's exhausting to think of the obligations we have in our lives. Stop the world, I want to get off!
I hate to tell you that the world ain't stopping for nobody, but you can choose to withdraw periodically to re-charge the battery. I call these mental health breaks because they restore sanity to an otherwise crazy existence. I'm talking about a moment, an hour, an afternoon or a day of doing something that you wouldn't normally take time to do or is outside of your usual routine. I find it especially helpful if I do something that exposes me to beauty.
